I have mushrooms growing in my lawn, why?

Mushrooms live on decaying organic matter in the soil. Most types of mushrooms do not damage the lawn, but most people find them annoying. The above ground mushroom part is the reproductive structure of the fungus. There is no permanent or chemical remedy for mushrooms other than mowing them down.
