All About Lawn Sprinkler Pumps
The basics.
If you have one of the most common irrigation systems, the sprinkler system, the pump is one of the main components that makes your system function properly. It is important to have the right pump for your system, or else it will not be as efficient as it could be. The first thing you need to do is find out how many PSI you want your sprinkler's to be extracting when they are on. Once you figure this out, you need to call you local pump dealer. They will be able to help you find the correct pump. It is not a great idea to buy your pump at a hardware store, because you may not get the results you want, and will have already spend a lot of money.
Don't waste your money.
To ensure that you will not be wasting your money, you need to make sure that your entire irrigation system is complete. The pump should be the last thing you purchase for your irrigation system. If you do not wait and the pump is not right for your system, there is a ton of money that you will be throwing down the drain. If you are doing the pump shopping on your own and you find a fairly inexpensive one, this could mean that you are about to waste your money. It is more than likely that pump will not work out for your multi-sprinkler system. Also when you are reading labels and descriptions on irrigation pump boxes, they are often misleading, and will not give you understandable or accurate information.
Stay away from displacement pumps.
One pump you do not want to use for your sprinkler system would be the displacement pump. The type of pump you need to be looking for to suit your system would be the centrifugal pump. The centrifugal pump has five different varieties that offer the same type of system. A booster pump is used to speed up the flow of water which is coming from lakes or rivers. A turbine pump is placed underwater and has a motor at the top where water goes through to a higher pressure. A floating pump is exactly what its name is. The floating pump is best when floating in lakes or ponds, with a pipe connected to the top that leads to your irrigation system. This is another form of a turbine pump. An end suction pump is the most common type of pump you will see in sprinkler irrigation systems. It literally suctions water through a motor which increases the pressure of the water's flow. A submersible pump is a pump and motor which is designed to be completely submersed. This is the most energy efficient water pump, which is typically used in drains or wells, because it does not have to suction the water, it pushes the water flow.
